Preventing Acid Reflux While You Are Pregnant
It's very common for women to experience acid reflux symptoms while pregnant. Heartburn can be very uncomfortable and sometimes painful, and you should do as much as you can to prevent or reduce incidences of acid reflux (GERD). When you're pregnant, your hormones naturally increase, keeping the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) from closing firmly, and allowing gastric acid and food to reflux back to your esophagus and throat.
The baby's development and changes in your body also create pressure on your stomach, and your stomach contents are often forced into the LES and esophagus.
You might not be able to eliminate acid reflux completely when you're pregnant, but there are several ways to reduce heartburn symptoms.
Avoid foods that trigger heartburn, such as chocolate, spicy foods, citrus fruits and juices, mustard, tomatoes and tomato based products, fatty foods, fried foods, and highly seasoned dishes.
Avoid caffeinated and carbonated drinks, such as tea, coffee, and soda. These drinks will cause your LES to relax, allowing the acid to return to your esophagus.
Stay away from alcohol beverages, which also tend to relax the LES. You should avoid alcohol while you're pregnant for many other good reasons too.
Avoid eating large meals. Eating smaller meals throughout the day will help reduce acid reflux symptoms. It will also help you avoid gaining too much weight while you're pregnant.
Eat slowly. Chewing your food thoroughly will help to avoid heartburn. You'll find it is good practice to chew your food completely even when you're not pregnant.
Stop eating at least three hours before going to sleep. Going to bed on a full stomach increases the likelihood that you'll experience acid reflux symptoms.
Elevate your head while sleeping. It will prevent stomach acids from going into your esophagus.
Wear loose-fitting clothes. Tight clothes will increase incidences of acid reflux.
Always bend at the knees, and not at the waist. This will reduce pressure in your stomach, and decrease heartburn.
Don't slouch. Sit erect in your chair to relieve pressure on your stomach.
Don't gain too much weight during your pregnancy. You'll reduce the stress on your stomach.
Don't smoke. In addition to all the other great reasons not to smoke, you'll reduce your acid reflux symptoms.
